About Dovedale & Staffordshire Moorlands

Plan your visit with confidence

RambleMetric is a real-time conditions app for Dovedale and the Staffordshire Moorlands — the River Dove's dramatic limestone gorge in the White Peak, famous for its stepping stones, pinnacles and the Izaak Walton connection. The Staffordshire Moorlands (Manifold Valley, The Roaches) extend the walking opportunities into the Gritstone Country.

Dovedale's stepping stones can be submerged or very slippery in wet conditions — check river levels before visiting. The gorge path is narrow and can become congested at weekends in summer. The Roaches is a gritstone ridge walk requiring sturdy footwear. Flash flooding is a possibility in the gorge after heavy rain.

Key Features

What to see at Dovedale & Staffordshire Moorlands

🪨
Dovedale Stepping Stones

The iconic stepping stones across the River Dove are the most photographed spot in the Peak District — ancient and recently restored. They can be submerged when the river is in flood: check river levels before visiting.

🎣
Izaak Walton

The Compleat Angler (1653), the world's most reprinted book after the Bible, was written by Izaak Walton who fished the Dove at Dovedale. The Izaak Walton Hotel still stands near the stepping stones.

🦁
Wallabies of The Roaches

A small colony of Bennett's wallabies has lived wild on The Roaches since escaping from a private zoo in the 1930s. They are occasionally seen on the gritstone slopes — a remarkable British oddity.

Safety Information

Before you go

⛑️ Important safety notes

The Dovedale car park at Thorpe is very busy — arrive before 10am at weekends. The stepping stones are the highlight but can be submerged: the NT usually puts alternative stepping stones in place in winter. The Manifold Valley (Ilam to Wettonmill) is an excellent alternative. The Roaches provides the finest ridgeline walking in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
