What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Classic — Dovedale Stepping Stones Easy
7 km · 2–2.5 hrs · England's most visited dale walk. Very crowded at weekends — arrive before 10am. Stepping stones may be submerged in high water. Spectacular limestone scenery.
Key Landmarks
🪨
Dovedale Stepping Stones
The iconic stepping stones across the River Dove are the most photographed spot in the Peak District — ancient and recently restored. They can be submerged when the river is in flood: check river levels before visiting.
🎣
Izaak Walton
The Compleat Angler (1653), the world's most reprinted book after the Bible, was written by Izaak Walton who fished the Dove at Dovedale. The Izaak Walton Hotel still stands near the stepping stones.
🦁
Wallabies of The Roaches
A small colony of Bennett's wallabies has lived wild on The Roaches since escaping from a private zoo in the 1930s. They are occasionally seen on the gritstone slopes — a remarkable British oddity.
