Peak District
conditions & visit score

The Dark Peak's blanket peat bogs are among the deepest in England outside Scotland. Kinder Scout in cloud is a very different place to Kinder Scout in sunshine. RambleMetric tells you which one you're getting before you set off.

About Peak District

Plan your visit with confidence

RambleMetric is a real-time conditions app built for inland walkers. It combines live weather, ground moisture, mud risk, visibility and path conditions into a single Visit Score — so you can see at a glance whether today is a good day to head out onto Kinder Scout and the Peak District moorland.

The Dark Peak is open peat moorland at up to 636 m. Weather, visibility and ground conditions change rapidly and without warning. Blanket bogs are a serious hazard year-round. Data shown is gathered from third-party sources and may not reflect current on-the-ground conditions.

Key Features

What to see at Peak District

🌊
Kinder Downfall

England's highest waterfall at the plateau edge — in strong westerly winds it blows straight upward. A dramatic destination in any season.

⛰️
Kinder Scout

The 636 m blanket peat plateau — site of the 1932 Mass Trespass that ultimately led to the creation of national parks. Featureless in mist, extraordinary in clear conditions.

🏰
Mam Tor

The 'Mother Hill' — Iron Age hillfort at 517 m with a remarkable shattered face from ancient landslip. The road below has been closed since 1979 due to ongoing movement.

📍
Pennine Way Start

The Old Nag's Head pub in Edale marks mile zero of the 431-mile Pennine Way to Kirk Yetholm. The route crosses Kinder Scout on day one.

Safety Information

Before you go

⛑️ Important safety notes

Always carry a map, compass and waterproofs. The Kinder plateau is featureless in mist — GPS can be unreliable in deep cloud. Avoid bogs by watching for bright green sphagnum moss. The Pennine Way starts at Edale — it is demanding in wet conditions. Grouse shooting takes place on managed moors: observe access signs.
