What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Classic — Kinder Scout Plateau Hard
15 km · 5–6 hrs · Edale to the plateau via Grindsbrook, across the peat hags to Kinder Downfall, return via Jacob's Ladder. Featureless in mist — navigation skills essential. Bogs are knee-deep after prolonged rain.
Short — Mam Tor Great Ridge Moderate
8.5 km · 2.5–3.5 hrs · The Great Ridge from Mam Tor to Lose Hill. Clear, well-maintained path with spectacular views in both directions. One of the most accessible quality walks in northern England.
Key Landmarks
🌊
Kinder Downfall
England's highest waterfall at the plateau edge — in strong westerly winds it blows straight upward. A dramatic destination in any season.
⛰️
Kinder Scout
The 636 m blanket peat plateau — site of the 1932 Mass Trespass that ultimately led to the creation of national parks. Featureless in mist, extraordinary in clear conditions.
🏰
Mam Tor
The 'Mother Hill' — Iron Age hillfort at 517 m with a remarkable shattered face from ancient landslip. The road below has been closed since 1979 due to ongoing movement.
📍
Pennine Way Start
The Old Nag's Head pub in Edale marks mile zero of the 431-mile Pennine Way to Kirk Yetholm. The route crosses Kinder Scout on day one.
