Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before embedding the widget.

Is the CoastMetric embed widget free to use?

Yes — completely free. Enter your email to unlock the embed code generator, then copy the iframe code and paste it into your website. No API key, no fees. We only ask that you keep the "CoastMetric" link in the widget footer intact.

Which UK locations does the widget cover?

The widget covers 100 UK coastal and inland walking destinations, including major national parks, AONBs, Heritage Coasts and popular trails from the Seven Sisters to Ben Nevis, Dartmoor to the Causeway Coast.

How often does the widget update?

Data is fetched live when the widget loads and refreshes automatically. Weather, wind and tide data are sourced from UKHO Admiralty, Open-Meteo and the Environment Agency — the same authoritative sources used by UK safety services.

Will the widget slow my website?

No. The widget loads inside an iframe with loading="lazy" — it only activates when the visitor scrolls it into view. Your main page performance (Core Web Vitals, LCP) is completely unaffected.

Can I customise the size or appearance?

You can set any width and height in the iframe attributes. The widget is fully responsive within its frame. The colour scheme and branding match CoastMetric's design system and cannot be modified.

Does the widget work on mobile?

Yes. The widget is designed mobile-first and works on all screen sizes and devices, including iOS Safari and Android Chrome. On narrower embeds (below 380px) the layout compresses gracefully.

Is there a WordPress plugin or Squarespace block?

Not yet — but the standard HTML iframe embed code works in any page builder, CMS or website platform that allows custom HTML: WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, Ghost, Substack, and more.

What data does the widget collect about my visitors?

None. The widget loads from coastmetric.com inside a sandboxed iframe. It does not set cookies, access localStorage on your domain, or track your visitors. It has no access to your website or its data.
