About Whitby Coast

Plan your visit with confidence

CoastMetric is a real-time conditions app for Whitby and the North Yorkshire Heritage Coast. Whitby Abbey ruins, the 199 Steps, Dracula associations and outstanding fossil beaches make this one of England's most compelling coastal destinations. Check conditions before you visit.

The North Yorkshire Heritage Coast path crosses unstable shale and mudstone cliffs that erode rapidly. Sea fret (haar) from the North Sea can descend with little warning, drastically reducing visibility on the clifftop paths. The shore below the cliffs is accessible only at low tide and should be vacated well before the tide turns.

One of England's best fossil-hunting beaches — Jurassic mudstone exposes ammonites, belemnites and reptile bones at low tide. SSSI — collect only loose fragments from the beach.

Safety Information

Before you go

⛑️ Important safety notes

Robin Hood's Bay beach and the base of the cliffs to the south are fossil-hunting areas — accessible at low tide only. Do not attempt to reach the base of the cliffs on a rising tide. The cliff paths between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay have several boggy and eroded sections. The 199 Steps to Whitby Abbey are steep but well maintained — take care in wet conditions. Dracula's grave in St Mary's Churchyard is a popular stop.
