About The Trossachs

Plan your visit with confidence

RambleMetric is a real-time conditions app for the Trossachs and Loch Katrine — the heart of Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy country. The dramatic Highland scenery of Ben A'an, Ben Venue and the Victorian SS Sir Walter Scott steamship on Loch Katrine makes this one of Scotland's most popular walking destinations.

The Trossachs hills are accessible but the weather is typical Scottish Highland — rain can arrive within minutes, visibility can drop rapidly, and temperatures on summit ridges are significantly lower than at loch level. Ben Venue (729 m) is a more serious undertaking than Ben A'an.

Key Features

What to see at The Trossachs

SS Sir Walter Scott

A Victorian steamship still working Loch Katrine since 1900 — now running on biodiesel. Cruises from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar Apr–Oct. Book in advance.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Rob Roy Country

The outlaw folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor (1671–1734) was born and operated in the Trossachs — his cave above Loch Lomond and many Glen locations are associated with the 'Scottish Robin Hood'.

🐛
Midges

The Trossachs is famous for its midges — tiny biting insects that thrive in still, humid conditions Jun–Sep. Carry repellent, check the midge forecast, and prefer breezy days for lochside walks.

Safety Information

Before you go

⛑️ Important safety notes

Ben A'an (461 m) is steep but well-used — allow 3–4 hours and carry waterproofs. Ben Venue (729 m) is a full day — navigation skills required above the treeline. The Loch Katrine circular cycle/walk path is 26 miles — the section from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar is an excellent shorter walk (6 miles one-way). Midges are severe in sheltered lochside areas June–September — carry repellent and choose breezy days. SS Sir Walter Scott steam boat cruises run spring–autumn.
