West Wight, Isle of Wight, England
The Needles are geologically connected to Old Harry Rocks 29km away — the same chalk ridge, split by the sea 10,000 years ago. Wind is the dominant factor here. CoastMetric gives you the full picture before you cross the Solent.
About The Needles
CoastMetric is a real-time conditions app built for coastal visitors. It combines live weather, tides, wind speed, air quality and path conditions into a single Visit Score — so you can see at a glance whether today is a good day to walk to The Needles headland.
The Needles headland and chalk cliffs are fully exposed to the English Channel. Winds funnel strongly around the headland. Cliff edges are unfenced and drop sheer to the sea. Data shown is gathered from third-party sources and may not reflect current on-the-ground conditions.
Walking Routes

Walk from Alum Bay car park across Headon Warren to the NT Old Battery viewpoint above the chalk stacks. Exposed to Channel winds — the most dramatic views on the Island.
Longer loop taking in the heathland of Headon Warren, the cliff path to the headland and return via Totland. Good for watching the sun set over the Channel in fine conditions.
Key Features
Three chalk stacks plus a fourth that collapsed in 1764. The red and white striped lighthouse at the tip is inaccessible to the public. Views are best from the Old Battery above.
Victorian gun battery at the headland tip. National Trust; café and exhibition inside the fort. The best official viewpoint directly over the stacks.
Famous for its 21 layers of coloured sand cliffs. Chair lift access to the beach (seasonal). The Landmark Attraction is adjacent with food, shops and glass-blowing.
High chalk ridge east of The Needles with Tennyson's monument at the top. Part of the long-distance Tennyson Trail walking route across the Island to Carisbrooke.

Safety Information
National Trust manage the headland and Old Battery. The coastal path along the cliffs to the viewpoint has no barriers. Stay on the marked path. Children and dogs must be under close control. The chalk is unstable at the headland tip — the Needles lighthouse is inaccessible to the public.
