About Lincolnshire Wolds

Plan your visit with confidence

RambleMetric is a real-time conditions app for the Lincolnshire Wolds — England's most northerly chalk hills and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A tranquil landscape of rolling chalk ridges, ancient hedgerows and traditional market towns, birthplace of Alfred Lord Tennyson and largely undiscovered by the crowds that flock to similar areas further south.

The Lincolnshire Wolds are gentle walking country, but paths across arable farmland can be very muddy in winter and poorly waymarked. Field paths may be ploughed over on working farms — some navigation is required. Check path conditions before winter visits.

Tennyson Country

Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809–1892) was born at Somersby in the heart of the Wolds — 'The Brook', 'In Memoriam' and many poems are set in the landscape of these chalk valleys and wide skies.

🌾
Traditional Farmland

The Lincolnshire Wolds retain much of the traditional chalk farmland landscape lost elsewhere — ancient hedgerows, chalk streams and unimproved grassland supporting skylarks, grey partridge and hares.
