Key Features

What to see at Dedham Vale

🎨
The Hay Wain

Flatford Mill and Willy Lott's Cottage are the setting for John Constable's 'The Hay Wain' (1821) — arguably the most famous English landscape painting. The scene is remarkably unchanged nearly 200 years later.

🌊
River Stour

The tidal boundary between Essex and Suffolk — navigable by punt and canoe. Boat hire available at Dedham and Flatford in summer. The watermeadows flood regularly in winter.

🌸
Spring Wildflowers

The Stour watermeadows are outstanding in May — cowslips, cuckooflowers and early marsh orchids colour the traditionally managed grassland.
