About Cheviot Hills

Plan your visit with confidence

RambleMetric is a real-time conditions app for the Cheviot Hills — the wild heart of Northumberland National Park, one of England's least visited and most remote national parks. The Cheviot (815 m) is a vast grass and peat plateau straddling the Scottish border, with outstanding views of Scotland and the Northumberland coast on clear days.

The Cheviot Hills are England's most remote accessible upland. The summit plateau is a vast, featureless bog that can disorient walkers in cloud. No phone signal. Military live-firing ranges operate on the western Cheviots (Otterburn) — always check firing times before visiting. The Pennine Way sections can be very boggy in all seasons.

Key Features

What to see at Cheviot Hills

🦅
Hen Harrier

The Cheviot Hills are one of England's last strongholds for hen harrier — the most persecuted bird of prey in Britain. The open moorland is also home to merlin, short-eared owl and curlew.

🏛️
Border Country

The Cheviot ridge is the Anglo-Scottish border — the long history of Border Reivers (feuding cattle raiders) lives on in the landscape of tower houses, earthworks and ancient drove roads.

Safety Information

Before you go

⛑️ Important safety notes

The Cheviot is best approached from Harthope Valley near Wooler — a well-used path leads to the summit plateau via Scald Hill (where the path can become vague). The Pennine Way approach from Kirk Yetholm across the Border ridge is one of the finest long-distance walks in England. Check Otterburn Ranges firing times (MOD) before visiting the western Cheviots.
