What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Classic — The Cheviot from Harthope Hard
19 km · 6–8 hrs · From Harthope Burn car park via Scald Hill to the summit of The Cheviot (815 m). The upper plateau is a vast featureless peat bog — navigation by compass essential in mist. No shelter; very limited mobile signal throughout.
Moderate — Hadrian's Wall Path Moderate
9 km · 2.5–3.5 hrs · The finest section of the 84-mile Hadrian's Wall Path between Housesteads Fort and Sycamore Gap. Clear, well-maintained path along a dramatic dolerite escarpment. Excellent in most weather conditions.
Key Landmarks
⛰️
The Cheviot
Northumberland's highest point at 815 m. The summit is a broad, featureless peat plateau — one of England's most remote summits. Clear conditions give views to the Firth of Forth and beyond.
🏛️
Hadrian's Wall
UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of England's most dramatic Roman monuments. Built in AD 122, the wall runs 73 miles across northern England through the park's southern edge.
🌊
Kielder Water
Northern Europe's largest man-made lake by volume, surrounded by England's largest managed forest. The Kielder Observatory is one of Europe's best dark sky sites — extraordinary stargazing on clear nights.
🌙
Northumberland Dark Sky
England's largest International Dark Sky Park designation — 1,400 km² of some of the darkest skies in Europe. The Milky Way is visible on clear moonless nights from most of the park.
