What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Classic — Viaduct Viewpoint Easy
5.5 km · 1.5–2 hrs · Walk from the station car park up to the famous viaduct viewpoint, then down to the Jacobite monument at Loch Shiel. Time for the Jacobite steam train crossing if visiting in summer. Midges can be severe in calm conditions.
Key Landmarks
🚂
Glenfinnan Viaduct
The 21-arch concrete viaduct (1901) was made world-famous by the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express crossing. The Jacobite steam train (June–October) crosses twice daily — book viaduct viewpoint times in advance.
🏛️
Jacobite Monument
The 18m tower marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the Jacobite Standard on 19 August 1745, beginning the last Jacobite rising. National Trust for Scotland; visitor centre and café.
🌊
Loch Shiel
A 28 km freshwater loch with no road along its western shore — one of Scotland's most remote and beautiful lochs. Visible from the monument; boat trips available in season.
