What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Short — Coldingham Bay to St Abbs Easy
5.5 km · 1.5–2 hrs · Coast path north from Coldingham Bay to St Abbs harbour and village. Gentle gradients with good rock pool access en route. Café at start and end — good for families.
Classic — St Abbs Head NNR Circuit Moderate
7 km · 2–2.5 hrs · Loop from St Abbs via the lighthouse, headland viewpoint and Mire Loch. Cliff paths can be indistinct. Sea haar (coastal fog) can arrive without warning — carry a map and compass.
Key Landmarks
🏛️
St Abbs Lighthouse
Built in 1862, automated since 1993. At 68 m above sea level with panoramic views north to the Bass Rock and south to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) on clear days.
St Abbs Harbour
Working fishing harbour and world-class scuba diving site. The entire headland is a Voluntary Marine Reserve with exceptional underwater visibility. Dive charter boats operate from the harbour.
🦅
Seabird Colony
Kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills, shags and fulmars nest on the volcanic cliff ledges May–July. One of the most important seabird colonies on the east coast of Britain.
🌊
Mire Loch
Freshwater loch behind the headland — a quiet wildlife haven with wildfowl, reed buntings and occasional otters. Lies in a sheltered hollow behind the exposed clifftops.
