What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Classic — Hole of Horcum Circuit Moderate
10.5 km · 3–4 hrs · Descent into the great geological hollow — the floor is boggy after rain. The rim walk gives panoramic views across the moor. Fully waymarked; path indistinct in one section near Levisham Beck.
Easy — Esk Valley Walk Easy
9 km · 2.5–3 hrs · Riverside walk through wooded Esk Valley from Glaisdale to Grosmont — then return by NYMR heritage steam train. Flat, well-maintained paths. Good in almost all conditions.
Key Landmarks
🌿
Heather Moorland
England's largest continuous expanse of heather at over 300 km² — reaches peak bloom in August, turning the moor purple. The moor is managed for grouse shooting: burning creates the patchwork pattern visible from above.
📍
Hole of Horcum
A 200 m deep natural amphitheatre on the open moor — formed by glacial meltwater springs eroding the softer rock. One of the most dramatic and photographed landscapes in Yorkshire.
⛰️
Roseberry Topping
The 'Cleveland Matterhorn' at 320 m — half the mountain collapsed in a 1912 mining subsidence, creating the distinctive jagged profile. The finest viewpoint in the Cleveland Hills.
🚂
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
One of England's finest heritage railways — steam and diesel trains between Pickering and Grosmont through the heart of the moor. Connects to the Esk Valley Line at Grosmont for Whitby.
