What to Expect

Routes, landmarks & what to bring

Routes
Classic — Dams Circuit Easy
12 km · 3–3.5 hrs · The main reservoir walk past all five Victorian dams. Flat and accessible year-round. Outstanding for red kites and dramatic overflows after heavy rain.
Key Landmarks
🦅
Red Kite
The Elan Valley was the last refuge of the red kite in Britain — the species was reduced to just a few pairs here by the 1960s. Now thriving, with hundreds visible throughout mid-Wales.
🏗️
Victorian Dams
Five dams built 1893–1904 to supply Birmingham with water — 100 km of aqueduct by gravity alone. The castellated towers and stone architecture make them extraordinary industrial monuments.
📖
Shelley's Valley
Percy Bysshe Shelley lived at Nantgwyllt (now submerged beneath the reservoir) in 1811–12. The flooded village is one of several communities displaced when the valley was dammed.
